Lucio Fulci is on fine form here in possibly his best horror offering.
As ever, the plot is virtually redunadant, and it is the striking visuals and doom laden atmosphere that is important, and this has both in abundance.
The plot centres around a hotel in Louisiani which it is claimed was built above a secret gate to Hell.
A stupid thing to do, you have to admit.
Well, as luck would have it - for the viewer that is, not the protaganists in the flick- the rumours are correct, and zombies are escaping from Hell into this world, through the gate in the basement.
If the plot is simplistic, the visuals are anything but, as this drips menace.
Shocking, disturbing, at times repellent, this is a horror masterpiece plain and simple.
