Denzel Washington plays Detective John Hobbes who was involved in bringing multiple murderer Edgar Reese to trial and eventual execution. Weirldy though, Reese doesn’t seem too upset about his punishment.
Shortly after his death, more killings occur which bear an uncanny resemblance to his slayings.
Is it a copycat killer?
Is it an accomplice?
Or is it in fact an ancient demon called Azazel, who can transport himself from one person to another by touch alone, hellbent on bringing an era of chaos to reign on Earth?
Well, I guess you know the answer to that one already.
Washington is sublime, as always, and the acting throughout is excellent. Standouts include a hilariously moustached James 'Tony Soprano' Gandolfini as well as a remarkably sober performance from John Goodman.
The supernatural elements are certainly interesting, and it's spooky for sure, the direction of the spirit passing amongst the general population adding a real sense of menace.
It's long though, be warned, and is a bit of a talky one, though it doesn't drag for a second.
Beautifully shot, with a strong script and a great cast, this is a quality thriller.
