Del Toro's first mainstream feature is a mixed bag.

Mira Sorvino plays Dr. Susan Tyler, an entomologist who was in charge of the Judas Breed project, genetic manipulation of cockroaches to eradicate a deadly disease that is killing swathes of people in the US.
And it works, wonderfully well, with the disease carrying 'roaches killed off swiftly.
The Judas Breed themselves have been engineered to be sterile, meaning that after one generation they will die out.
At least that was the plan.
Several years later, people begin to go missing and reports abound about creatures lurking in the subways.
Could there be a connection between the Judas Breed and the new menace?
Of course there could.

It's pretty atmospheric stuff, with Del Toro's usual brooding direction present and correct.
Some of the subweay scenes are so inky black as to be almost unwatchable, which isn't too clever, but overall the movie is entertaining and retains a creepy edge for the duration.
Not a classic, by any stretch, but an efficient enough chiller.
