Be careful what you wish for.
Favourite line:"Once, in a time before time, God breathed life into the universe. And the light gave birth to Angels. And the earth gave birth to Man. And the fire gave birth to the Djinn, creatures condemned to dwell in the void between the worlds."

A powerhouse of horror luminaries both behind the camera and in front converges to produce this well above average shocker.

Andrew Divoff plays The Djinn, a malevolent genie that has been trapped in a jewel for centuries. Inadvertantly unleashed in modern day America - d'oh - he sets about restoring his power and trying to fulfil his ultimate goal: to issue in a new dark age where The Djinn rule supreme, for if the summoner of the Djinn asks for three wishes, his fellow Djinn will break through the dimensional barriers and take over the world.
Muhahahahaha!!!

It all sounds improbably bombastic, and indeed it is, but that's half the fun.
The ironic deaths of the people The Djinn encounters are great, as the viewer tries to guess what he's going to do to them once he tricks them into asking him for something. It's a bit like watching Casualty, when most sane people are just trying to figure out how the nice family of four are going to be maimed this week.
Divoff is superb, exuding menace aplenty, and has a marvellous voice, dripping with evil.
His scarred, pockmarked face all adds to the aura of sinisternessnessnessness.
Gory in places, and featuring one of the best opening sequences to a movie I have ever seen, this is a great horror film.
