You ever seen a Tim Burton movie?
Did you like it?
If the answer is yes, then check this out, if no, avoid as, honestly, this is about as Burtonesque a movie as you are likely to see.
Gothic sensibilities? Present and correct.
Danny Elfman score? Yes indeed.
Bonham-Carter and/or Johnny Depp? Yes, yes, yes.
Following the cult success of The Nightmare Before Christmas, Burton tries his hand once more at stop motion animation, this one following the trials and errors of one Victor Van Dort, a shy, clumsy groom-to-be who screws up the rehearsal for his wedding. In a fit of nerves, he races into the forest to practice his vows, only to recite his lines right next to the grave of a would-have-been bride, who is promptly resurrected, zombie style, only to assume that the vows were meant for her.
And she's keen to accept.
Whilst the humour is mainly dark, there is the occasional lapse into the more slapstick end of the comedic spectrum, something not to be approved of children though, that aside, it's hard to find fault here. The artistic design of the the animation is simply exquisite and would, I am almost certain, scare the living kidneys out of many children. The ensemble voice cast is exceptional, featuring the Burton ever-presents Depp and Carter, as well as Christopher Lee, Joanna Lumley, Richard E. Grant and Michael Gough, to name but a fistful. Whilst not quite as captivating as 'Christmas', this is nevertheless a triumph of the dark animated art form.
Check it out.
