One of the weaker offerings from Hayao Miyazaki - the mind behind such astounding fare as Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service - this is an oddball of a movie.

Porco Rosso is a pilot in Italy in the 30's. Besides his distinguished flying skills, he is also notable for looking like a human pig(!). His features are porcine, and his life is quite a lonely one. He makes ends meet by taking various jobs to collect and recover valuables from a roguish band of pirates who, though not exactly moral, aren't your archetypal villains either.

The main focus of the movie is the loneliness of Rosso, despite the fact that two beautiful women are head over heels in love with him.
It's interesting, and Miyazaki's towering imagination is on show in places throughout, but this just lacks that indefinable 'something', that 'je ne sais quoi' of his finer works.
Worth a look, but don't judge all aniime from this one.
