Van Damme in possibly his best movie - only Kickboxer really comes close.

The Big Belgian block of wood this time is determined to win The Kumite, an underground, illegal ultimate martial arts competition, where there are few rules, and even the few that are in place are seldomly followed strictly. People who enter often are seriously injured, and the idea of a Westerner winning it is treated with derision. He needs the permission of his army superiors to attend and, when they refuse, he goes AWOL, convinved he can win it.

As ever, the plot is secondary to the fight sequences, which are superb, and Bolo Yeung's presence alone as the main adversary, Chong Li, is a real treat.
Tacky, cheesy, and a whole lot of fun.
