Kubrick's masterpiece is a film split in two.
From the fairly lightweight and almost comic opening sequences as the men are trained at the boot camp, this descends into a master class in intensity.
The suicide is just the beginning of a maelstrom of misery and suffering.
One of the tensest moments recorded to film comes when the sniper is in the building and the soldiers have to find 'him'.
A gripping film, visually stunning, with a strong message.
