Martin Scorcese's masterpiece - and that's saying something about the man that brought the world Raging Bull and Taxi Driver.
Ray Liotta plays Henry Hill, a guy that always dreamed of becoming a gangster. Indeed, that is almost a direct quote from the intro to the movie, one of the best opening scenes in cinema history. As Hill's stock in the Mafia climbs, so too do the problems. His relationship is turbulent to say the least, his allegiances with other Mafia members are strained, and, on top of that, the authorities are onto him.
Visceral, intelligent, witty and mind bogglingly violent at times (Joe Pesci's Tommy DeVito being the instigator of most of it and his is a truly terrifying performance) this is The gangster movie of the modern era.
If you haven't seen it yet, make sure you do.
If you have seen it and don't rate it, you really are beyond help.
