Favourite line:"If we can get a picture of Julia Roberts in a thong, we can certainly get a picture of this weirdo."

Sam Raimi's mega-budget superhero treatment is a sensitive, emotional tale of a young man whose life is turned upside down when he is inadvertantly bitten by an unusual breed of genetically engineered spiders.
We all know the story of his ascent to superhero greatness, but it is the pathos and depth of characterisation that elevate this way above the usual superhero fodder. The then relative unknowns MacGuire and Dunst are superbly cast, and there is genuine chemistry and tenderness between them.
The set-pieces have to be seen to be believed, though there is clear evidence of the hasty editing that had to be undertaken after the events of September the 11th.
Hopefully, the original version will one day come to light but, in the meantime, this is a veritable treat.
