Jean Claude Van Damme takes some stick.
True, the Belgian Bicep has featured in some genuine stinkers, but he has also been in a few top class actioners.
And this is one of them.
Jean Claude is a retired bouncer of sorts, and now lives a peaceful life with his social worker wife,who takes in a young Chinese immigrant girl to try to prevent the authorities from deporting her.
Trouble is, the Chinese girls father is a powerful, and really fucking angry gangster, and he wants his daughter back.
Launching an attack on a restaurant in China town where the girl and Jean Claude's wife are eating with friends, all but the girl are slain, including Long Cord Man Slamme's wife. Big mistake.
With nothing left to care about - well, his son who has been taken hostage, but he doesn't seem too fazed by this - Man Slamme embarks on a revenge mission of epic proportions. Brutally violent, this is intense film-making.
With shades of film-noir in the cinematography, this looks amazing, especially considering the modest budget that would have been allowed.
Additionally, the score is phenomenal, adding a real sense of menace and gravitas to proceedings.
Man Slamme isn't too shabby in the acting department either, shockingly.
All in all, a grisly, dark, very tense action thriller.
Liked it a lot.
