Two Hollywood big-hitters team up for this full throttle action comedy.
The plot:
Two bank robbers plan a heist in small town America, that they believe will net them $3 million. Busting into the vault, they discover far more cash than expected - well over $40 million - and decide, unsurprisingly, to take the lot.
What neither of them knows, however, is that they are both working undercover, one for the DEA, the other for the US Navy. And, as if their lives weren't complicated enough, they also have the CIA and an evil Mexican drug smuggler to contend with.
It's going to be a tough few days.
Action comedies can really go either way. For every Lethal Weapon 2, there's a Knight and Day, every Beverley Hills Cop there's a Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Happily, this one tends towards the decent end of the scale and, whilst never reaching the heights of the Gibson / Glover buddy buddy combo, it certainly gets more than halfway up the slope.
In Wahlberg and Washington, we have a pair of quality actors, both clearly relishing their roles, the snappy dialogue fertile fodder for their craft, Denzel more the straight man, Wahlberg the smartass, and at times it genuinely crackles with energy.
Action wise, this is all fairly straight forward car chase, gun fight, fisticuffs territory, and that's no bad thing in a summer stuffed with all out CGI-fests, as this film feels far more traditional, almost a throwback to the heyday of the action franchises that burgeoned during the late eighties through early nineties.
Whilst, in years to come, few will be citing this as a defining moment of cinema, or even referencing it amongst the great action films, still it contained enough wit and invention in the wordplay to keep Smell the Cult engaged for the near two hour runtime, which is a feat in itself.
Won't set your world on fire, kids, but bet you'll enjoy it.
