Thirty years ago, in Romania, a cave is discovered hidden beneath an old church. As soon as the explorers detonate the explosives to gain access, a rock fall descends and traps them within.
Skip forward to the present, and the ruins of the church are again being scoured, and the cave is once more discovered.
It's deep.
Very deep.
Potentially miles across and flooded by water. Only one thing to do then; Call in the best underwater cave exploration team and take a butchers. Trouble is, the people who were trapped thirty years ago are still alive. And they've changed, mutating into the kind of clawed, flying monstrosities that would make H.P. Lovecraft think twice.
A reasonable horror-lite yarn here, which cranks up the tension with some effect.
The setting is plausible and well realised, and the acting is competent enough.
I couldn't help feeling, though, that it just wasn't vicious enough. At the moment you expect to see the blood and guts, the film feels like it loses its nerve, desperate to retain the multiplex pleasing 12 Certificate to reap the financial benefits that leads to.
Still, enjoyable throughout, but it won't rock your world.
And why are all these marine biologist types always so damned good looking?
