I actually saw this after watching the Amercian remake - the first time I have done it that way around - and have to say the Americans didn't do a bad job of it.
The first 45 minutes or so is virtually identical in terms of set up, even down to individual scenes looking alike. In fact, so accurate is it that the girlfriend asked me if I was sure that it was the American version we had watched, and not this one. I politely pointed out that the big clue was the Californian smiles and the fact they were all speaking English!
Anyhoo, mom and daughter move into a spooky old house, and discover that the ceiling leaks like a swine. It also becomes apparent that the apartment upstairs belonged to a couple whose daughter went missing a few years previously.
So where is all the water coming from?
And who is the little girl the main character keeps glimpsing from the corner of her eye? Slow moving, for sure, but this builds up nicely.
Intensely creepy, with some nasty shock moments that genuinely make you jump, this is intense and demanding, just as horror should be.
Top class.
