Cronenberg is somewhat of a master at the understated. His movies tend to dwell in melancholy and a general sense of despair, accentuated by minimalistic performances from the leads, the slow moving camera poring over every detail on screen and superbly eerie incidental music.
All points hold true for this movie, perhaps his finest outside of the straight horror fare of his early career.
Jeremy Irons plays the dual role of Beverly & Elliot Mantle, gynaecologist identical twins whose dependence on one another goes beyond the mere professional. Their personalities are polar opposites, the yin to the others yang and they share everything; life experiences, business decisions, even women, by one pretending to be the other.
When a new flame arrives on the scene (the scintillating Bujold) Beverly begins to fall in love and his whole life begins to fall apart as he and his brother drift further apart by the day.
Hauntingly beautiful at times, this movie has a power that is difficult to describe in mere words, that will have it lingering with you for many long days after it has ended.
Irons is simply stunning in his bipolar role, and Bujold is excellent as always.
Disturbing, thought-provoking and utterly mesmeric, this is a marvellous film.
