Raimi all but dispenses with the horror trappings of the first two movies, focusing more on the comedy element, which was only ever going to be a disappointment in this household, as the comedy is of the 'wacky' variety more than any other kind, something that always leaves me cold.
Bruce Campbell returns as Ash, trapped in The Dark Ages after being sucked into the vortex at the end of part two, and he must reclaim the Necronomicon if he is to have any hope of returning to the present. Problem is, he must recite an incantation precisely, and select the correct Necronomicon from the three on show, else risk unleashing the Army of Darkness upon the Earth.
Have a guess what happens?
No, go on.
The Army are reasonably well realised, harking back to the skeleton army from the original Jason and the Argonauts, but the lack of pure viciousness is disappointing.
It's an entertaining enough affair, and a clever attempt at creating a 'mainstream' zombie movie long before 28 Days Later or the Dawn of the Dead remake surfaced, but ultimately this feels like a watered down affair, especially when compared to the horror genius that is the original movie in the series.
Damn shame.
