Eli Roth's follow up to his critically mauled, but cult mega-hit Hostel is not quite the movie I expected.
As the movie kicks in, it seems Roth has set out to make the same movie again, the spin this time being that instead of a bunch of randy boys visiting Slovakia it's a bunch of randy girls - well, two randy girls and one 'nerd'.
Simultaneously, we follow two rich American men, who bid on the girls in question for the dubious privilege of killing them in the factory, one of whom is clearly looking forward to the torture VERY MUCH INDEED whilst the other seems a little nervous.
And that's about it setup wise.
The girls are lured to the appropriate village, and each kidnapped, then it's all about who will survive and how, whilst the men who have paid for the action get more and more psyched up / anxious as the moment approaches.
Whilst lacking the kicker of the original given that we now know exactly what is going to happen to the victims, this instead focuses a little more on characters, which is a brave move for a horror flick such as this, and it's pretty successful too.
Roth also manages to invert most of the horror cliches successfully, leaving the viewer not entirely sure as to how the movie will play out.
Oh, and the ending is hilarious, but cross your legs fella's, this is going to sting. Not as gory or violent as the first, this is an effective 'torture porn(!)' movie nevertheless.
