Stuart 'Re-Animator' Gordon directs this chaotic straight to video offering set at the time of The Spanish Inquisition.
As heretics are rounded up and duly executed, and witches found at every turn, this is a far from trouble free time.
The Inquisitor Torquemada, played with gusto by Lance 'Bishop' Henriksen spends much of his time cooped up in a castle, away from the filthy peasants. One day, a baker and his beautiful wife draw attention to themselves at a public execution, and are brought to the castle; she to be tried as a witch, he to be killed just for the hell of it.
After being stripped and stretched, our heroine, Maria, finds herself locked in a cell with a self-confessed witch and, wouldn't you know it, it seems she may have powers of her own.
Sadistic, violent, but with a real self-conscious sense of wit, this is a proper horror film, free of the gloss and sheen that has blighted so many in recent years.
Skulls, cadavers, mutilations, water boarding, it's all here, and all the better for it.
Top quality horror from one of the best directors in the business.
