Favourite line:"He tells me that even old flesh is erotic flesh, that disease is the love of two alien kinds of creatures for each other, that even dying is an act of eroticism."

Cronenberg's masterly horror feature debut is a disturbing tale of parasitical invasion, sexual depravation and, ultimately, a study of the fragility of the society we inhabit.

A few lucky citizens move into a purpose built suite of luxury apartments, replete with all mod-cons and security measures to ensure their comfort and safety. Unfortunately, hidden beneath the veneer of civility is a terrifying secret - inhabitants of the building are falling victim to a parasitical infection which, once the infection has set in, turns the host into a slavering sexual fiend.

Disturbing throughout, Cronenberg handles the violence and paranoia with his usual clinically deft touch, and this tackles several of Cronenberg's favourite subjects - sexual fetishism, mankind's reliance on technology and the inherent weakness therein, as well as the weakness and corruptibility of flesh.

A magnificent horror movie.
