Tagline: | The monster movie that breaks new ground. |
Favourite line: | Not a line, a scene: The sequence where the hilarious survivalist nuts take out a worm with their underground arsenal, picking up bigger and bigger guns as the monster keeps on living through the almighty onslaught. A true laugh out loud moment. |
Big budget monster movie that is a real hoot.
Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward play two bumbling oddjob men, taking any work they can get stuck in a town called Perfection, population of about 30, in the middle of the the Nevada desert. They resolve to head off to the big city to make better lives for themselves, but are forced to abandon their plans as a series of bodies are found, and it becomes clear that all is not well in the small desert town. The natives aren't sure what to make of things, and are horrified to discover that a new, previously undiscovered species of subterranean worms have moved into the area.
And they're really fucking hungry.
Effectively a B movie, but with a Hollywood budget, this is a success on just about every level; There's gore, though not too much. There's humour, and a neat, simplistic plot, held together by a supremely likeable lead pair of characters, with genuine rapport.
Witty, silly, and wildly entertainging, this is great.
So, a bit like Squirm but with money.
And a decent script.
And people that can act.
And a sense of humour.
And good character interchange.
OK, not much like Squirm at all, then.
