Luc Besson's childhood vision of space operatics, he longed for this film to be made, and took many years to convince a major studio to give him the financial backing to bring his vision to reality.
And a mixed bag it is too.
Fusing the mainstream Hollywood ideals (Willis, Blade Runner-esque city scapes, 'zany' comedy) with the Euro-centric eccentricities (opera backed fight scenes, Milan inspired costumes) was never going to be easy, and this is as schizophrenic as it is satisfying.
Visionary and juvenile in equal measure, this is very confusing, every great scene seems to be followed by a cringe inducing moment of cheese but, overall, this is still an entertaining watch.
Good versus evil, ancient prophecies, and huge, turtle like aliens are just some of the ingredients in this pot-pourri of visual styles.
Intriguing.
