Favourite line:"Come on, you mindless motherfuckers!"

Quite a disappointing effort from the master of tension, John Carpenter.

Ice Cube is James 'Desolation' Williams, a dangerous criminal who needs to be transported from a prison on Mars.
Natasha Henstridge plays Lt. Ballard, leader of a crack military group, which also includes the comically masculine Jason 'ard as nails' Statham amongst their number. The team arrive at the assigned location ready to pick up their man, expecting to find a bustling, thriving town, but instead it is deserted.
Further investigations reveal some grisly secrets; dead bodies, severed limbs, heads on spikes.
Could it be that the vengeful spirits of Mars are angry, and looking to claim Mars back as their own?

Well, yes.
Cos that's the plot.
There is the odd spot of gore, as well as some reasonably well handled battle sequences, but overall this feels a little flat. Carpenter's work often comes across as quite clinicial and, usually, this is a good thing, but here it just seems sterile, lacking in any atmosphere whatsoever, pun not intended.
Don't get me wrong kids, it's not awful, just disappointing by Carpenter's usually very high standards.
