Year:1996
Country of origin:USA
Director:Roland Emmerich
Genre:Alien invasion tosh
Starring:Will Smith, Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Mary McDonnell
Rating:4/5
IMDB link:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116629/
Tagline:We've always believed we weren't alone. Pretty soon, we'll wish we were.
Favourite line:The President : "What do you want us to do?" Alien: "Die."

Emmerich's updating of the alien invasion genre is acceptable, though not entirely successful.
The special effects are great, and the build up superb as the giant craft loom into view and hover over every major city in the world.
Problem is, we've seen it all before.
'V' anyone?
Ultimately, this is a fan boy movie as it is clear Emmerich has a passion for the genre, and simply enjoys making large scale, high spectacle versions of things he has seen before, though this disappoints on other levels too; the arch-American patriotism is nauseating in places (the President takes to a fighter plane, for Christ's sake), and it is also way too long.
Length of film does not equate to gravitas in all cases people.
A mildly diverting way to pass a few hours, though I would recommend 'V' over this every time.
