Mad Mel is Mad Max, a regular guy living in the near future in a post apocalytpic world where everything is in decay.
Petrol and water are luxurious commodities, as are vehicles, and indeed, the only vehicles still in use are battered and beaten, bolted together from whatever peices can be scavenged.
When Max's friend, wife and baby are killed, his world is turned upside down, and he must control his descent into insanity to ensure that the vengeance he seeks is carried through to completion.
Stunning visuals with a real sense of the bleakness of the environment in which it is filmed, this movie uses Australia's deserts more effectively than any movie before or since.
Gibson is perfect in the lead role, convincingly portraying someone on the brink of madness, and his sense of pent up fury is highly disturbing.
Original and visionary, this is a must see movie.
