Favourite line:"All you people are so scared of me. Most days I'd take that as a compliment. But it ain't me you gotta worry about now."

Surprise sci-fi hit of 2000, from a director whose only previous work of note was the fairly sub-standard The Arrival, a post X-Files conspiracy bit of fluff starring Charlie Sheen.
This time around, both the budget and storyline are far superior, and this really is a cracker of a sci-fi flick.

A space vessel crash lands on a planet after being hit in a meteor shower, and only a handful survive.
Amongst them, one Richard B. Riddick, an extremely dangerous criminal.
The planet is baking hot, warmed by three suns, and the survivors realise they must find food and water to survive. What they don't realise is that only once every 22 years does the planet plunge into darkness, and when this happens, the alien inhabitants of the planet emerge, eager to consume any living matter that they find.
Riddick seems their only hope, as he has a genetic condition allowing him to see in the dark.

Stylish, frightening and action packed, this is a thrill ride from start to finish, and Van Diesel is surprisingly effective in the lead role.
A belter.
