Favourite line: | Not a line, but the whole scene when Denzel Washingtons's character relieves Hackman's captain of command. Totally intense cinema. Superb |
Dramatic, effective submarine thriller that is tense, claustrophobic and full of action.
Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman are exceptional as the submarine Captain and Executive Officer, locking horns in a battle of wills when forced to face the possibility of releasing nuclear weapons against Russia.
Hackman's rugged, sea-hardened Captain is convinced the orders they have received are genuine, but Denzel insists on following correct protocol and, as the message was incomplete, believes they should wait for confirmation before releasing the weapons, as the consequences of an incorrect release would have global ramifications.
The only real flaw in the movie is the overtly patriotic Americanness at times, but this can be excused as it is not constant.
A really good thriller.
