Ang Lee's visually stunning period piece is a martial arts movie that relies more on beautiful choreography and prosaic direction than rampant fight scenes and bulging muscles.
Don’t get me wrong, the fight scenes are here, and they are spectacular, but they are quite unlike anything that has hit mainstream cinema before.
Wire work and an element of fantasy mark out the set-pieces, and they are dazzling, as the protaganists hop from rooftop to rooftop, dancing through the air majestically.
The plot is secondary, involving the search for a sword of legendary repute.
Who cares, frankly. Just sit back and enjoy the visual feast.
