Favourite line:"On a similar note I must confess to you, I'm giving very serious thought to eating your wife."

Ridley Scott's sequel to the monster hit psycho chiller The Silence of the Lambs sees Anthony Hopkins reprising his role as the flesh eating Hannibal Lecter, but Jodie Foster's Clarice Starling is now played by the efficient, if never inspiring, Julianne Moore.

Hecter is alive and well, living in Florence. He's on the verge of becoming curator of a library (hardly low profile), and still retains an interest in Starling's career. Similarly, a hideously disfigured individual, Mason Verger (Oldman), is on the hunt for Lecter to exact revenge, for it was he who inflicted the wounds upon his ravaged body.
Thrown into the mix is a Florence policeman with a dubious sense of morality. He recognises Lecter and, instead of notifying the relevant authorities, opts to try to claim the reward offered by Verger for himself.

It's an efficient enough thriller, though never really captivates.
Scott's direction is strangely flat, apart from the cityscapes - Florence looks stunning - and even the main protaganists give the impression of sleep walking through the movie. Hopkins never quite convinces in his return to the role and, as mentioned previously, Moore is never remarkable.
It's a reasonably diverting two hours and a bit, and there's some reasonably satisfying gore - a great gut spilling scene, and some giant boar munching on some poor unfortunate's being the highlights - but, overall this is disappointingly unmemorable.
