A boxing movie with a difference, this is to Rocky 4 what Apocalypse Now is to Rambo 3.
Clint Eastwood plays a retired 'cut man' now running a gym. Hilary Swank arrives in town one day and asks that he train her. Reluctant at first, he gradually warms to her and sets about guiding her on course for a crack at the world championship.
Essentially, that's the plot, but this movie is about much more than boxing. At it's core this is an emo-drama, but lashings of schmultz are resisted, and instead we have a touching account of the platonic relationship that develops between two people in the same business, but a generation apart.
The human cost of their trade is played out superbly, and it would be a hard hearted son of a bitch indeed who doesn't get a lump in the throat towards the end.
Warm, funny, moving, without ever being trite, this is Clint on fine form.
