Mel Gibson's controversial version of the last days of Jesus, following events from the initial betrayal by Judas, right through to the eventual crucifixion and, briefly, the resurrection three days later.
Now, let's clear something up straight away. As far as I am concerned the whole thing is a work of fiction, but that doesn't stop it being an extremely powerful, thought provoking movie. As a study of the barbarism mankind is capable of it is superb, as the bloodthirsty Jewish elders scream for his crucifixion, despite the reluctance of the more lenient Roman Emperor. What is interesting is that the Jewish people are not as vengeful as their elders, whilst the normal, Roman soldiers are a vile, sadistic bunch.
The torture scenes and sequence where Jesus has to carry the cross to the spot of his execution are harrowing in the extreme. This is brutal, unflinching movie-making that, whether you believe the stories source material or not, will surely stay with you long after the closing credits.
A must see for all.
