Favourite line:"Gods are selfish beings who fly around in little red capes and don't share their power with mankind. No, I don't want to be a *god*. I just want to bring fire to the people."

Bryan Singer takes on The Man of Steel franchise, and is only partly successful.

The plot:
Superman has been absent from Earth for some five years and, upon his return, is dismayed to discover that the people who once adored him have now lost all faith in him as a superhero. Meanwhile, Lex Luther is hatching a plan to reign havoc by submerging the US beneath the ocean, with himself surviving to reign over a strange new world.

It's as straight-forward as that.
Harking back to the original, this movie once more brings to the fore the original premise, that Superman was sent to Eareth by his father, Jor-El, to save our planet from suffering a similar fate to his own, Krypton.
There's the inevitable romantic dalliance with Lois Lane (Bosworth) which is a little tiresome after a while, but that aside, this is a more than adequate return to the screen for Our Hero.
Spacey 'phones in his performance as Luther, seeming even more bored than usual in the role of the arch-villain, but it is Brandon Routh as Superman himself that is the real star turn, a genuine find for Singer as, prior to this, he was relatively uinknown save for the odd small role in such trivial shows as Will and Grace and Gilmore Girls.
Though far from perfect, and definitely too long in the running time department, this is nevertheess a welcome return for one of America's finest.
