Richard Donner's stunningly visual interpretation of the Man of Steel comic book tale.
This is the one where Supes arrives on earth, and begins to display his extraordinary powers from a very young age.
At it's heart it is a tale of love and loneliness - Clark would surely trade all of his powers for the love of Lois seems to be the message throughout. Gene Hackman hams it up to perfection as Lex Luther, surrounded by his incompetent accomplices.
Long and drawn out, to the point of dissuading many from watching, this is poetic superhero film making.
Having said all that, I prefer the second....
