I'd heard bad things about this one and was prepared for the worst but, for me, Fincher can do little wrong.
Zodiac, San Francisco's most notorious serial killer, provoking both police and press alike is, to this day, an unsolved case file.
What we have here is an examination, based on said case files, of the investigation, poring over the leads and dead ends, triumphs and mistakes of the SFPD as they struggled to come to grips with a killer that, for perhaps the first time, was using the media to play a cat and mouse game with the authorities and who also, in a further bid to elude authorities, spanned many miles to seek fresh victims.
With great performances throughout, the standouts being Downey Jr's alcohol soaked reporter Avery and Jake 'Donnie Darko' Gyllenhaal's Robert Graysmith, cartoonist turned amateur sleuth, this clocks in at an arse clenching two and a half hours, but flags not for one second.
A fascinating insight into the machinations of a police department pushed right to the wall by one psychopath, this is just terrific.
