Excellent pagan horror creepiness from the 70's.
This is a film that just couldn't and wouldn't be made today (and no, I don’t count the utterly pointless remake).
Edward Woodward plays a fanatically religious police officer sent to a Scottish island to investigate reports of a missing child.
He has the photgraph of the girl in question, and an absolute resolve that he will get to the bottom of the mystery.
Imagine his surprise, then, when he discovers that the locals are less than helpful, and are indeed obstructing his investigation.
Worse still, to his fevered religious mind, the locals are practicing pagan rituals blatantly.
What the hell is going on?
Simply put, this could be the best horror movie ever made, though there is not a drop of blood spilled, and not a single moment of gore.
An atmosphere of menace presides throughout, superbly accentuated by the wonderful paganistic soundtrack.
Sumptuously shot, with a stellar cast, and a killer twist at the end, this is simply unmissable.
Brilliant.
