Favourite line:"The program Smith has grown beyond your control. Soon he will spread through this city, as he spread through the matrix. You cannot stop him. But I can."

Direct continuation of the disappointing second installment.
Gone is the faux philosophical whimsy of the middle part, and in its place is muscular, effects driven action.

The war with the machines is coming to an end, one way or the other, and the last human city, Zion, is besieged. Thousands upon thousands of sinister Sentinels swarm in the skies, and only Neo has the knowledge and skills to preventthe final destruction of humanity.
But will he make it in time?
Well, what do you think?

Superior in tone and substance to Reloaded, this is a reasonably satisfying conclusion to the series.
Lacking the sheer class of the first movie, this instead opts for brute force, pummelling the viewer with one effect after another and, whilst usually that would be a cause for concern, in this instance it works wonderfully.
The Wachowski Brothers have cited Japanese anime as an influence and here, during the huge battle that makes up the middle act of the movie, we see the nearest we may ever get to live action anime, as the 'mecha' traits (huge machines) are exploited to great effect. As The Sentinels swarm like shoals of vicious fish, the APU's stand their ground with gusto, leading to a tour de force of effects driven cinema.
Subtle it ain't.
Impressive it is.
Whilst I am still highly dubious about the brothers' claims that they always intended the films to be a trilogy, after the disappointment of the first sequel, this one was worth the wait.
