Hugh Laurie's American mega-hit series sees the former Brit comedy favourite transformed into a belligerent, mysanthropic doctor, who specialises in dealing with cases where other diagnostics teams struggle to find a route cause for a patients' symptoms. His methods are simple - do whatever it takes to ensure the patient gets the correct treatment, even if that means waiving pesky little things like legal practice and patient consent.
Ably assisted by his team of three - the token black neurologist (this is constantly referred to throughout the series in House's acerbic fashion), the young Aussie hot shot and the requisite beautiful female, the love interest of the show, though not quite in the manner you may expect.
Sharply scripted, this is witty, intelligent and, somehow, manages to avoid feeling formulaic, a trap that similarly themed shows such as CSI fail to escape.
Laurie is excellent, and you quickly forget the fake American accent, the only slight niggle is the thought that, surely, most doctor's don't see three of these ailments in their entire career, let alone one a week. But such a gripe is easily dismissed given the quality of the rest of the ingredients.
A great show, and not an alien or zombie in sight - though there is the odd spot of necrosis.....
